Fada khichdi is made with nutritious broken wheat and yellow moong dal simmered with vegetables and spices, this dish is quite wholesome and does not even require any grand accompaniments.
Broken wheat (Fada) – 1 cup
Yellow moong dal (split yellow gram) – 1/2 cup
Ghee – 1/2 cup
Peanuts (sing) – 1/2 cup
Curry leaves (limdo) – 12 to 15
Bay lead ( tamalpatra) – 1
Cinnamon sticks(taj) – 2 to 3
Cloves(laving) – 5 to 6
Cumin seeds (jeera) – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds (rai) – 2 tsp
Asafoetida (hing) – pinch
Ginger-green chilli-garlic paste – 2 tbsp
Onions (chopped) – 2 medium
Potatoes (chopped) – 2 medium
Green peas – 1/2 cup
Carrots (chopped) – 1/2 cup
Tomatoes (chopped) – 2 medium
Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric powder (haldi) – 2 tsp
Coriander-cumin seed powder – 2 tsp
Garam masala – 1 tsp
salt – 2 tsp
water – 3 1/2 cups
Wash and soak the broken wheat and moong dal in enough water.
Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker and add the cinnamon, cloves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, peanuts, curry leaves and asafoetida.
When the seeds crackle, add all the vegetables like potatoes, onions, tomatoes, carrots, peas and mix well.
Add all the spices – 2 tsp red chilli powder, 2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp garam masala, 2 tsp salt and mix very well.
Now add 1/2 cup moong dal and 1 cup fada and 4 cups of water. (Remember: for fada- calculate water quantity by multiplying with 2.5 cups. Ex: If you have taken 1 cup fada then use 2.5 cups of water. I used 1 cup water for 1/2 cup moong dal) Mix well and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles on medium flame.
Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
Garnish with coriander and serve hot with fresh curds/butter milk.
